From the supplier: Insurance experts attending the annual meeting of the National Assn of Casualty and Surety Executives and the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers discussed the proliferation of mergers and acquisitions in the independent agency system. One source noted that 900 mergers or acquisitions have taken place among medium-large insurance dealers since 1984. Others discussed the need for agencies with between $1 million and $2 million in revenues to merge for the sake of survival. Acquisitions can also speed growth less expensively than internal expansion.
