From the author: Personnel records evaluations were compared with results from seven assessment centers to determine if these evaluations improved the predictive power of the assessment center. Fifty-five candidates for promotion were evaluated in the assessment centers. During each assessment center an average of four assessors observed and evaluated behaviors. Three different judges outside the assessment centers evaluated the management potential of the candidates by reviewing their personnel records. Supervisor's evaluations of the management potential of the candidates were collected for comparative purposes. The assessment center and the records evaluations were found to be valid predictors of management potential. A combination of the assessment center and records evaluations was found to be feasible and a better predictor than the assessment center alone. Suggested procedures for the records evaluation are included.
