From the supplier: Dalit poetry in Marathi consists of a limited corpus of poems written by the Dalits, a political community the began as a movement led by B.R.Ambedkar in the 1920s. The Dalits were former Mahars or untouchables who had acquired literacy through migration into urban areas where they found employment as common laborers. They succeeded in breaking out of the caste system through mass conversion to Buddhism. Their poetry rejects the past and everything related to it so strongly that it alienated them from the rest of society.
