From the author: The present study investigated the effects of three pretraining motivational strategies on trainee motivation and performance: goal setting, participation, and accountability. Data were collected from 281 trainees who attended a training seminar on performance appraisal. The results indicated that providing trainees with an opportunity to participate in selecting trainee topics did not directly increase motivation or performance. Goal setting and accountability exerted a strongly significant and direct effect on trainee performance. Implications for training, research, and practice are discussed.
