From the supplier: Chief executive officers (CEOs) should cultivate good relationships with their chief information officers (CIOs) to avoid costly mistakes in information technology (IT) investments. An estimated $1 is wasted for every $3 invested in IT, due to a poor relationship between CEOS and CIOs. The former are usually unwilling to listen to computer jargon from the CIOs and merely authorize them to make the best investment, often leading to a poor fit with company needs. Moreover, CIOs will want to purchase the latest technology, which could lead to expensive downtime as systems are continuously updated. To forge a better and more profitable relationship with their CIOs, CEOs should take direct responsibility for their firm's IT investments by ensuring that the CIO reports directly to them. Moreover, CEOs should cultivate a working knowledge of IT to be able to review their CIO's plans and better ensure their fit with bottom-line results and firm strategy.
