From the author: The piazza has been an integral part of Italian cities since medieval times. Though still used as public open space and market, the piazza in the late twentieth century performs a complex set of functions. A typology of piazzas elucidates this complexity and explains the role of the piazza relative to public transportation and increased automobile use in Italian cities.
