From the supplier: Legends may not have the same authority as history, but they are told and retold because they are a means, both for the storyteller and the audience, to respond to history. A classroom experience and an analysis of a Norwegian 'bergtagning' story collected in the 19th century and retold in a Christmas party are presented to show that folk narrative is a way of negotiating identity. This is why folk narrative should be examined not only in the context of history but also in the context of individual and community experiences.
