From the supplier: Companies that are currently creating their own software should think twice before continuing with their software-development efforts. Maintaining an in-house development unit worked when the vertical-integration model of the corporate organization was de rigeur. In the current business environment, however, this approach to software no longer works. Most companies are now looking to identify their core competencies and searching for outside providers who will supply them with extraneous requirements. If a company's core competencies include software development, it makes business sense for them to develop software departments. For those companies where software development is not the core competency, it is best to just acquire software from outside providers.
