This synonymous association has generated the conclusion that banks have minimal cost gains from merger or growth markets. However, since scale efficiency and elasticity are two different concepts, misleading conclusions have been developed concerning industrial efficiency. Both scale variables are essential to establish the potential gains from bank acquisitions.
