From the supplier: Most political observers gave Denver, CO, Mayor Wellington Webb a slim chance of reelection in view of the charges of incompetence and cronyism leveled against him and the strong media backing enjoyed by his challenger, Mary DeeGroot. His campaign was not helped by his efforts to portray the liberal DeGroot as a racist. However, Webb managed to turn things around when DeGroot began espousing an end to affirmative action and a tougher policy against street gangs. Webb used this issue to rally the Hispanic and black communities against his opponent. Another key to Webb's victory was DeGroot's failure to convince the white electorate why they should vote for her.
