From the supplier: Union activism in the US has declined since its peak in the 1970s. Several factors such as labor market changes and the enhanced position of government in the workplace have contributed to the decline of major strikes. However, the dismissal of 12,000 members of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) by the Reagan administration in 1981 may have been a major factor. Analysis of data from 1960-1992 indicates strong correlations between strike activity and the variables union membership and unemployment. Moreover, the PATCO incident had a significant but non-independent impact.
