From the supplier: The small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector plays a vital role in the European economy. In 1993, 99.9% of businesses in the European Union (EU) were SMEs. SMEs provide jobs to a major portion of the labor force as well as account for two-thirds of the total sales volume in the non-primary sector. In response, the EU has enacted policies to support SMEs. Among these are the free movement of good and services, easing of regulatory restrictions, and streamlining of accounting procedures.
