From the supplier: Several programs based on the Z39.50 search protocol are extending the possibilities of library automation. The Z39.50 protocol is vendor- and platform-independent, and can retrieve records from any system running compliant software. Several vendors displayed their Z39.50 programs at the American Library Association convention, which focused on the virtual library theme. Some tools were shown that connect library access to the World Wide Web. The Windows-based NetPublisher supports Web, Gopher and Z39.50 searches, and can deliver information over any TCP/IP network. NetPublisher also functions as a publishing tool. Data is entered only one time, and is then automatically formatted for all types of searches. Users do not need to be familiar with HTML because of the convenient templates that are included. Other tools showcased at the conference include gateway products that connect HTTP and Z39.50, tools to turn a library's resources into a Web catalog, and other Z39.50-based offerings.
