From the author: This study examines the relationship among organizational structure (organic and mechanistic orientations), job stress, and job satisfaction in audit and MAS (Management Advisory Services) functions in two Big-Six CPA firms. The results show that employees' perceptions of organizational structure, job stress, and satisfaction are different in Audit and MAS. MAS employees reported more organic structure, less stress, and greater job satisfaction than Audit. Job satisfaction in Audit tends to decrease with increases in organic structure and job-related stress. Increase in stress in MAS tends to decrease job satisfaction, which does not show any significant relationship with structural orientations. The comparison between Audit and MAS indicates that less organic orientation relates to lower stress in both functions. While the relationship between stress and productivity is not clearly established in the literature, this study, like previous studies, established that stress influences satisfaction adversely. A plausible conclusion derived from the findings of this study is that managers need to create a careful balance between job related stress, organic/mechanistic orientations, and job satisfaction for organizational effectiveness.
