From the supplier: Companies may be able to enhance their competitiveness by using computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) technologies to support their total quality management (TQM) initiatives. CIM involves the use of automation and information technologies to integrate product design and engineering, process planning, and manufacturing. These technologies include cellular manufacturing, computer-aided manufacturing, computer-aided design and engineering, and manufacturing requirements planning. The CIM concept focuses on the processes of doing things right. TQM, on the other hand, focuses on doing the right things. It aims to facilitate continuous improvement of customer satisfaction. Both TQM and CIM seek company-wide integration of information technologies to enhance the organization's competitiveness. A framework for effectively combining the two concepts is presented.
