From the supplier: Mergers of big banks such as Chase Manhattan Bank and Chemical Bank followed after First Union and First Fidelity, NDB and First Chicago, Fleet and Shawmut and PNC and Midlantic. These mergers are causing anxiety among investors since they may destabilize the banking industry and increase costs which would redound to taxpayers. About 12,000 employees will be laid off and hundreds of branches will be closed. Women from the lower-income bracket and minorities are likely to be laid off.
