From the supplier: University of Michigan's Solar Car Team uses Dell computers as part of its racing strategy, allowing team members to devise unique solutions to the logistical, mechanical, and technical problems of traveling in a solar vehicle. The Solar Car Team uses two Dell 590 XL 90MHz Pentium computers to aid it in forecasting the weather at 24-hour intervals. The two systems are connected to satellite antennas, downloading information from weather satellites, and via cellular modems from Weather Service International. Weather data is processed by custom-written modelling software. A Dell Latitude XP i486 100MHz Dual-Scan color-portable system monitors vehicle information and performs various diagnostic functions including interfacing with the Fluke Hydra Logger data acquisition system to optimize the solar array of the car.
