From the supplier: Chrysler Corp. introduced process management in its organization when it acquired American Motors in 1987. This involved the creation of platform teams, which are basically cross-functional organizations accountable for all the processes required in the design, manufacture and marketing of particular vehicle types. In 1993, the company decided to expand this approach to the general management, implementing processes encompassing the platform groups. The transition to process management involved the participation of senior managers who are required to change from simply giving directions to acting as a coach, a communicator and a facilitator. Meanwhile, the chief executive had to abandon individual, specific responsibilities in favor of overall activities, such as strategic planning, priority setting and people empowerment.
