From the supplier: The concept of social meaning is needed along with that of social norms to account for the context that affects behavior. In other words, norms are focused only on behavior, whereas meaning concerns the relationship between behavior and context. Meaning focuses on the context as it affects the actual costs and benefits of behavior in determining the effectiveness of a norm. The concept of meaning also has a prescriptive advantage in suggesting different ways norms can be changed by altering the context within which they function.
