From the supplier: Total quality management (TQM) and other performance initiatives have helped Mack Trucks turn itself around. The truck company has been very successful since its founding in 1900, holding over 21% of the heavy-duty truck market in North America and employing as much as 17,000 people as recently as 1980. However, its performance started to decline in the late 1980s when it lost its focus on its customers and quality began to suffer. Its market share dropped to just 10% and its workforce dwindled to 5,400. Mack Trucks was on the verge of bankruptcy by 1991. Fortunately, it was acquired in 1990 by Renault V.I., the commercial vehicle division of the French firm Renault Group. Renault had similar problems and was able to recover through TQM. Under Renault management, Mack's fledgling TQM program gained greater credibility and commitment and is now achieving significant goals.
