From the supplier: A study by the Electric Power Research Institute shows that almost 50% of the $5 billion allocated by electric utilities to information systems in 1994 was devoted to the integration of computer systems which were not created to work harmoniously with each other. As a solution to this problem, utilities can turn to data integration, which involves linking of computer systems to facilitate information sharing, access to timely information, avoidance of duplication, and limited access to sensitive materials. Cooperatives can achieve data integration by taking short-term actions as well as long-term actions. Long-term measures require the configuration of all new applications based upon a relational database and the creation of a common data access and display tool based upon a geographic information system. Utilities also have to choose between a single-vendor and a standards-based plug-and-play approach to data integration.
