From the supplier: The strategy of shareholder value management is gaining acceptance in Corporate America. One company that has implemented a value management strategy is Briggs and Stratton, whose introduction of the economic value added (EVA) financial system has already improved its stock price. The strategy of the company employs the EVA computation designed by Stern Stewart and Co. as an indicator of annual performance and of long-term value. The EVA program is tied to the company leveraged stock options. However, the company does not look at EVA as merely a means to determine which method of determining value creation is the best. It also uses EVA to ascertain how integrated capital stewardship is into the organization. The experience of Briggs and Stratton demonstrates that value management requires the assessment of the unique competitive and operational challenges to value creation and the development of program features to deliver value.
