From the supplier: Erskine Caldwell's novel 'Tobacco Road' subverted the conventions of Southern humor and attempted to critique Depression-era capitalism. Southern humorists tended to portray stereotypically limited characters with a complete lack of social awareness and change. Characters in 'Tobacco Road' have only the appearance of family ties and are poor without being honest or hard-working. Caldwell's intention to challenge sentimental stereotypes only allowed his audience to be amused by a lost cause.
