From the supplier: One of the economic reforms instituted by Syrian Pres Hafiz al-Asad was the strengthening of the country's tourism industry. The government has drafted laws such as Resolution 186 and Law Number 10 to encourage, through incentives, investments by private and local and foreign businessmen. This measure is estimated to create 120,000 jobs by the year 2000 and to attract five million tourists by the year 2010. The focus on tourism is brought about by the fact that it creates plenty of jobs, requires little infrastructure and few well-trained workers, and generates foreign currency.
