Prime minister John Howard appears to continue the commitment to non-discriminatory immigration and multiculturalism practised by Australia since the 1970s, but he faces strong opposition in some areas. Nevertheless, Australia will soon become more integrated with Asia and more multicultural than it was in 1901.
