From the supplier: Wholesale competition in the electric industry, where electricity distribution entities are allowed to select their power suppliers, has increased since the enactment of the Energy Policy Act of 1992. However, electric cooperatives are currently confronted with the potential for retail competition, where consumers are allowed to choose their power suppliers. Both wholesale and retail competition can collectively affect distribution cooperatives and power generation/transmission (G&T) entities. The issues that arise in such a situation include the manner in which wholesale competition has affected the G&T distribution system relationship, how the legislation of retail competition in the states will affect cooperatives that are members of G&T entities in those states and how wholesale and retail competition will affect cooperatives that do not own G&Ts.
