From the supplier: Lee County School District, one of the poorest in the state of Virginia, linked its school libraries via a wide area network as a means of coping with the limited funds for teaching supplies. Microsoft Certified Software Specialist Michael Hughes designed the client/server library software management system for the WAN. The public access library catalogue was designed as a web site so that older computers that couldn't support the new applications would still be able to access the catalogues through web browsers. The Lee County system now averages about 30,000 hits per day. Local stores of frequently accessed information are made as a means of tolerating heavier-load days. The system costs roughly one dollar per student per month. The goal is to create a ratio of four students to a computer and have access to the best educational resources in the country.
