From the supplier: Benchmarking and performance measurement has become a major issue in the management of real estate investments by pension funds. One factor for this is the dismal performance of pension funds' real estate investments. Another is the perception that benchmarking and performance measurement for real estate is less developed than those for other asset types. There are four commonly used benchmarks used by pension funds, which applies only to private real estate investments and not to publicly traded investments. The four are indices, statistical universe/peer group comparisons, normal portfolio/portfolio opportunity distributions, and risk-adjusted performance measures. The most recommendable are real estate security indexes although the others should also be used.
