From the supplier: Australia's Constitutional Convention, which closed on Feb 13 1998, was unresponsive, timid and dull. Prime Minister John Howard was firmly opposed to direct election, and the convention was therefore a victory for him. Australia's eventually becoming a republic was known before the convention began, and its events changed few minds.
