From the supplier: Chief Executive magazine and A.T. Kearney sponsored a roundtable discussion of CEOs on how to measure the value of investments in information technology (IT). The issue is important because IT spending has been increasing at a rapid pace, with companies around the world spending $1 trillion in 1997. The discussion becomes more urgent when one considers that many such investments have failed. Four out of 10 major IT projects have not succeeded while three of the 10 are questioned. The participants at the discussion talked about their views on what aspect of IT investment outcome to measure. They also discussed if justification for this kind of spending is necessary. Some participants encouraged their peers to treat IT like they do marketing. Although it does not really contribute to productivity, IT has the power to increase shareholder value through innovation.
