From the supplier: Students subscribing to Listserv discussions on the Internet need to be encouraged to participate actively instead of merely 'lurking' and reading the postings without adding their own. Differences in social skills and life experiences, as well as varying levels of assertiveness and familiarity with assignments, account for varying levels of participation. The passiveness of television and even traditional teaching methods can make students less inclined to post messages. Online conferences can ideally change these patterns of behavior, although overcoming shyness can be as difficult online as in person. Conferencing software that allows 'threaded' discussions is generally the most effective type. Hypertext conferencing can also support varied student activity. Teachers should require participation, form learning teams, make activities interesting, demand that opinions be backed up by facts, and structure activities. Other steps to take include requiring a hand-in assignment, knowing what to look for, and implementing peer grading.
