From the supplier: The influence of jazz music on Hart Crane's literary works is examined. Crane once wrote in a letter of his dream of creating an idiom for the transposition of jazz into words. He fantasized jazz as the Dionysian side of his personality that he wanted to set free. He improvised on his poems after reading Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Melville, Whitman, Blake, Shelley and Keats rather than just copying them. His poetry flourished during the jazz age when improvisation was at its height.
