From the author: To date, very few empirical studies of gainsharing have been conducted in actual organizations. Further, nearly all known published field gainsharing studies have been conducted in manufacturing firms, which raises the question of the research generalizability to the rapidly growing service sector. This study utilizes a quasi-experimental design to examine the differences in perception of organizational citizenship behavior, as seen in altruism and teamwork and in satisfaction with pay administration, between two service organizations - one employing gainsharing, the other a traditional individual incentive system. The findings suggest significantly stronger teamwork and satisfaction with pay administration for the gainsharing organization. Implications for researchers and practitioners are explored.
