From the supplier: Instant messaging (IM) is touted to be the next killer application on the Internet. IM, the next incarnation of electronic mail (e-mail), allows users to send instantaneous messages to a select group of individuals who can then immediately respond to the sent information. IM, which has vast potentials for information-sensitive businesses and industries, is expected to dominate the niche formerly occupied by teleconferencing, e-mail and telephony in a better and less expensive fashion. IM, unlike the Internet browser and e-mail, has the capacity to populate the Web in real time, a feature that has far-reaching potential implications. This potential is the reason behind the aggressiveness by which companies such as Microsoft and AOL are marketing their IM offerings.
