From the author: The History of Tabari is examined in the light of a key religious motif (the doctrine of the status of the companions) and the form of Islamic history (akhbar reports). An analysis of two accounts in Tabari, the Battles of the Camel and Siffin, suggests that the author expressed his views on this doctrine in relation to prevailing Hanbali and Abbasid views. The judicious use and placement of the various reports allowed the author to rank the companions in relation to their involvement in the first internal conflict in Islam. Moreover, his doctrine of the companions of the Prophet was a careful appraisal of their moral, and not their political, merits and demerits.
