From the author: Michael Sells' Early Islamic Mysticism is a significant departure from previous translation projects. Some comments are in order about the quality of the selections and translations in Sells' book. There are two challenging features of the book: the translator's rendering of Sufi significations of God and the language he chooses for interpreting Sufi expressions concerning union or unity with God.
