From the author: CEO succession and career issues have received increasing attention in both the popular business press and scholarly journals. This article explores whether observable patterns exist between industry features and career specialization of CEOs. We define "career specialization" as the proportion of a CEO's career spent in a particular industry, organization, or functional area. Industry characteristics will dictate the degree to which narrow versus broad functional, organizational, and industry experience is valuable. Consistent with arguments, we find that CEOs' industry, firm, and functional backgrounds vary predictably as a function of industry settings. We conclude by calling for a heightened role for HR expertise in the CEO selection process and greater consideration of the "fit" between industry characteristics and potential CEOs.
