The investigations reported in the following papers were performed to obtain a better understanding of the interrelation of these factors. The extensive use of carburized steels in engineering applications which require high endurance strength makes such knowledge essential to their most effective application to critical components. Failure of materials as a result of repeated stressing below the yield point has been recognized for over 100 years and the literature is extensive except for work on very hard materials. Trapped or residual stress in steel has been studied for at least 40 years but the literature is primarily concerned with measurement techniques and means of producing these stresses and only limited information is available on their influence on fracture..."
