From the author: Considerable attention in HRM has been given to the positive impact that generically-labeled High Performance Work Practices (HPWP) have on manufacturing firm profit. Past HPWP studies have used generic categories (e.g., information-sharing) to measure HPWP activity. This study provides an extension to existing HPWP knowledge by specifically identifying these practices and how they impact overall performance of units in a specific industry--rural electric, notfor-profit utilities. A study of 110 cooperatives found a positive significant relationship between specific HPWP and two key objective industry performance measures (as identified by industry experts). These results add to the growing call for expanded theoretical and empirical studies of HPWP to meet competitive challenges.
