Description

"The committee charged with the task of preparing this handbook on reinforced concrete design recognized that throughout the United States there are many codes and specifications covering a multitude of uses of reniforced concrete. In these codes various types of static and moving loads are anticipated for use under numerous conditions; consequently, there are many combinations of unit stresses needed for general design. One of the important objectives of the committee was to prepare tables covering as large a range of unit stresses as may be met in general practice. A second and equally important aim was to reduce the design of members under combined bending and axial load to the same simple form as that used in the solution of common flexural problems. Since the first edition was published many changes in codes and practices have occurred that have made revision of the handbook necessary. This edition conforms to the Working Stress Design provisions of ACI 318-63. The outline of the handbook has been maintained, with the extensive revisions and additions directed at: 1. Extension of existing tables to include higher strength concrete and steel. 2. Deletion of seetions based upon obsolete codes. 3. Improvements in the existing figures and charts. 4. Inclusion of new material on columns, footings, and deflections. Acknowledgment is given to the work of previous Committees 317 which prepared earlier editions. This committee has had the valuable suggestions and able assistance of Otto J. Stepenek and William F. Lawless. Without their efforts this report would have presented a problem too great for committee accomplishment." [from foreword]
