"At the opening session of Committee 215's symposium on fatigue, held in Hollywood, Florida in November, 1972, I had the pleasure and personal honor of dedicating the symposium to Dr. Paul W. Abeles. Although Dr. Abeles' many accomplishments are very familiar to the ACI, a brief biographical resume follows the Preface. Dr. Abeles has been active in the recent work of Comittee 215, and his wide practical experience along with his penetrating insight into research has served as an inspiration and guide to the committee's activities. A number of people merit special recognition for their efforts. The suggestion and initial planning for the symposium took place when Carl E. Ekberg, Jr. was chairman of Committee 215. It was intended to be a way of informing ACI members of work by the committee on a state-of-the-art report, and to be an opportunity for presentation of papers on recent experimental investigations on fatigue. Dr. John D. Antrin served as the chairman of the Symposium Program Committee. Presentations on the committee report were made in Hollywood by S. P. Shah, John M. Hanson, and Neil M. Hawkins, and subsequently at the concluding session in Atlantic City in March, 1973, by Carl E. Ekberg and Craig A. Ballinger. The committee expresses appreciation to I. C. Jhamb and J. G. MacGregor; Earl I. Brown II, Paul W. Abeles, and C. H. Hu; Neil M. Hawkins; Stefan Soretz, and E. W. Bennett for presentation of papers at the two symposium sessions. These papers are included in the volume. A special plaudit is due Laurence E. Svab for serving as the Secretary of the Symposium Program Committee. The task of arranging and following through on the reviews of the papers submitted for publication in this volume required a very substantial effort, and the comittee is sincerely appreciative of this work. It would also be remiss not to point out that all of the committee members spent many...." [from preface by John M. Hanson, Chairman, ACI Committee 215, Fatigue of Concrete]
