Yoshe Kalb

This book is about the destruction of the Russian Jews and of a man caught between love of God and love of a woman. Other men proscribe the earthly bounds for Yoshe Kalb, but he will see God through no man but himself. When he is guilty of the greatest transgression, the saintly Yoshe must make absolution in his own way, even if that way means the extinction of the entire Jewish community. Yoshe Kalb's journey through the Chassidic ghettos of eastern Europe foreshadows the plight of these people today, confined to a country alien and cruel, yearning for the homeland still denied.
