This IDC study provides an overview and analysis of the emerging IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) market in Japan. The study provides an overview and analysis of market and technology trends driving the development of carriers' next-generation networks (NGNs) and ultimately the implementation of IMS. It also presents KDDI's approach to NGN and IMS deployment, as well as strategies of key IMS vendors in Japan including NEC, Lucent Japan, Sonus Networks, Ericsson, BEA Systems, and Cisco Systems Japan.
"At present, the IMS market in Japan is mainly a vendor-driven play with limited clarity on how or when the carriers will roll out IMS. However, IDC believes IMS will in time be adopted by the carriers as the foundation of their NGN infrastructure. As the deployment of IMS grows, the carriers' businesses models will evolve as well, stimulating the demand for IMS applications and service development, enhancing the business opportunities for IMS going forward," says George Hoffman, group manager, Communications Research, IDC Japan.
