After World War I, he returned to Mississippik to run the family plantation. "Lantern On The Levee" are his reminiscences of this Southern Life, most of which regard life in Greenville and the Mississippi Delta with chapters on the Great Flood of 1927, Ku Klux Klan activities, travels in Europe, World War I, attendance at Harvard Law School, etc. All are spiced with impressions of Yankees and reflections upon race relations in the South. Son of Senator LeRoy Percy and grand-uncle of novelist and essayist Walker Percy, William Percy died January 21, 1942 less than a year after the book's initial first printing on March 10, 1941.
