As the field of group psychotherapy prepares to enter the next decade. the various schools that proliferated so rapidly during the sixties and early seventies have begun to sort themselves out. One notable result of this winnowing process, in which cumulative clinical experience has been allowed to select from this spate of theories and techniques that most valid and useful, has been to underscore the contribution of one man: S.R. Slavson. Increasingly, the principles laid down by this great pioneer as long ago as the mid-thirties are being recognized as the scientific basis of dynamic group psychotherapy. The author draws upon many decades of clinical experience to reflect on the human condition and its ramifications for psychotherapy.
