New York City's prominence in cultural, financial, and industrial affairs tends to obscure the fact that metropolitan New York is also one of the most geologically diversified areas in the country. This profusely illustrated book traces the evolution million years ago, when this area was part of an ancient inland sea, through the period when Manhattan Island was a sub-tropical forest roamed by dinosaurs and then, more recently, in the frigid grip of immense continental glaciers, to, finally, its skyscraper ridden present. There is an Appendix of eight detailed itineraries of one-day field trips of particular geologic interest in the city and vicinity.
