Description

Marcel Breuer (Peks, Hungary, 1920 - New York, 1981) was extremely prolific and produced a wide-ranging output that extends from large-scale projects to furniture. A major part of his oeuvre consists of single-family dwellings, many of which are found in the United States. This issue brings together a selection of his more important houses: from the first examples at the end of the 1930s, in which the influence of the Bauhaus is still very strong, to those of the 1960s in which Breuer has encountered his own highly original language. Apart from the first monographs of the 1970s, Breuer's work has been published on very few occasions. Of late his oeuvre has begun to be reassessed and 2G has decided to make its own contribution by rendering homage to one of the masters of 20th-century architecture. All the houses have been photographed by David Sundberg. Some of the photos of the period, especially those that depict interiors (the work of Ezra Stoller, Joseph Molitor and Ben Schnall) are also featured. These include the Hagerty house and the Kepes cottage and, appearing for the first time since its presentation at the MoMA in New York in 1948-49, the show house that currently functions as a guest house on a private property in upstate New York. Contents: Introduction Fifteen American Houses by Marcel Breuer from 1938 to 1965. The Refounding of the Domestic Universe on Experimental Grounds Antonio Armesto
