Description

This IDC study tracks and forecasts the worldwide market attach rate (aka penetration rate) for interfaces and technologies shipping in desktop and portable PCs from 2007 through 2012. Eighteen interfaces are studied in part 1 (see Worldwide PC Interface and Technologies 2008-2012 Forecast, IDC #214610, October 2008), and fourteen are studied in part 2 (this study). Technologies and interfaces supported through add-in cards and other aftermarket devices that are added to a PC after the PC's sale to the end user are not covered in this study.

"Historically, when average selling prices for notebooks were high and consumers purchased mainly desktops, the commercial market segment dictated trends in the notebook market. From an interface standpoint, this generally meant including only interfaces that were tied to specific uses and maintaining their presence over a long period of time due to legacy concerns by the conservative commercial client base. With the growth of the consumer notebook market, a greater array of interfaces are available and being added to notebooks, allowing OEMs to differentiate their PC offerings and develop usage-specific systems."- Richard Shim, research manager, Personal Computing
