This symposium was dedicated to the stability of natural and cut slopes (this is one of the major problems facing engineers on many mining and civil works projects). Specific examples are the evaluation of landslide hazards on natural slopes, the design of slopes for open pit mines and the design of spillway cuts on hydroelectric projects. This book evaluates the rock slope stability problems using 4 essential steps: identification of potentially unstable slopes and critical geologic features; determination of shear strength parameters in terms of effective stresses on potential failure surfaces; determination or estimate of pore pressures acting on potential failure surfaces; and analysis of static stability by three-dimensional methods.
