It is April...and on the tip of Fire Island, a lone man stands on the deserted beach. Silently, he steps into underwater diving gear. Cautiously, he heads for the chill waters and swims a mile out to sea. In the past weeks this man has methodically patrolled these waters, searching the ocean floor. And today, at last, his search is not in vain. Looming ahead is a dark mass that does not stir. His long search is ended. There, under years of ocean-growth and rust, lies the U-19, the German sub scuttled by her crew some 40 years before to prevent capture.
